We are in the middle of August and many families are on holiday. Probably you as well, perhaps just about to start. One of the things we like most about holidays is the breaking with routines… but this also has an impact on our diet. Plan your weekly summer menu
To start planning your summer menu, the first thing you have to do is to sit down and plan what you know you are going to do each week. Yes, we know that in summer improvisation is the norm, but surely there’s already a dinner happening or you’re planning a visit to those friends who spend the summer nearby. Make a note of these get-togethers so that you can make a weekly summer menu that you won’t need to cook on those days.
Once you’ve done this, start thinking about what fresh dishes you’re most looking forward to when you’re on holiday and make sure they’re healthy and balanced too. The shopping list, a must!
It’s good to make and plan a summer menu… but now it’s time to stick to it! Start by making a list of everything you need to buy and when. There are things like wine, pasta and canned food that you can buy at the click of a button whenever you want. But others, such as meat, fish or seafood, you may prefer to buy on the day you are going to cook them. In any case, the shopping list is essential. Not only does it help you not to forget anything, but it also allows you to focus on what you really need and not waste food.
A summer menu… frozen!
We love impromptu plans, and in summer there are thousands of them. If you want to maintain your summer menu, and at the same time be open to these unexpected but wonderful plans, freeze them! Make use of the famous “batch cooking”: prepare meals in advance and leave them in the freezer. This way, if a plan comes up that takes your fancy, the food won’t go bad, and if you finally go ahead with what you had planned, you’ll have it ready to go.
Besides, cooking on the spot in summer it isn’t the most appetizing thing to do… which sometimes makes us very tempted to skip our summer menu. On the other hand, if you have everything frozen, you avoid this moment of “I’ll see what I can find for a quick bite to eat”.
